Internet Acceptable Usage Policy
Internet users under the age of 14 must have a parent/legal guardian consent form on file. Parents must sign this form at the Library in the presence of a librarian.
Users 12 and younger must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian during the entire session.
Personal software may not be used on Library computers.
Internet software and equipment must be used as installed.
Users are not permitted to add, delete or modify the installed hardware or software.
The computer lab opens 15 minutes after the library opens and closes 15 minutes before the closing of the Library. Plan accordingly.
Pre-registering for the Internet is allowed in person or by telephone.
We cannot guarantee that you will successfully connect to the Internet.
Internet usage is on a first come, first served basis and others who have registered must have their specified times.
No reservation will be held longer than five minutes past the requested time.
There is a time limit of 60 minutes if others are waiting.
Time limits are at the discretion of the computer lab attendant.
Files may be printed or saved to a floppy disk.
A 10¢ per page fee is charged for printing
No files may be copied to the hard drive.
Users must pay for all pages printed.
Ask for help to limit print jobs in order to avoid excess cost.
All printing must be completed by the end of the user's session.
The Library does not permit the use of chat rooms or instant messaging.
Users of all ages are expected to confine their Internet exploration to appropriate use.
Examples of inappropriate use include, but are not limited to:
Unauthorized access
Sending spam e-mail
Computer hacking
Sending threatening, obscene or harassing messages
Violation of copyright laws
Accessing chat rooms or instant messaging
Any misrepresentation of the Greensburg Public Library
Using the Library's computers for illegal purposes (Users are solely responsible for damages or fines resulting from law violations.)
Sending, receiving or viewing material which may reasonably be construed to be obscene or pornographic or designed to appeal solely to prurient interests.
What constitutes inappropriate use is at the discretion of the supervising librarian on duty. General guidelines for violations of appropriate use are as follows:
First Offense: verbal warning
Second Offense: 30 days suspension of computer privileges
Third Offense: 90-day minimum suspension of computer privileges. Length of suspension to be determined by library director and/or the library board. Offender will be notified of the length of suspension and a method of appeal.
At the discretion of the supervising librarian, computer privileges may be immediately revoked if the situation warrants this action. The library director and/or the library board will then determine the length of this suspension. The offender will be notified of the length of suspension and a method of appeal.
Users shall assume the full responsibility of using the equipment and resources.
Users are expected to have basic computer skills, including the ability to use a mouse.
Whenever possible*, staff will attempt to answer brief basic questions, however, Library staff cannot provide training or one-on-one tutoring.
*Because of scheduling constraints, trained staff may not be available at all times.The Library is not responsible for lost, damaged or unavailable information due to technical or other difficulties. The Greensburg-Decatur County Contractual Public Library will not be liable for any direct, incidental, or consequential damages (including lost data or profits) sustained or incurred in connection with the use, operation, or inability to use system.
WARNING: If you download files to a floppy disk, be aware of the possibility of computer viruses. You should install and use virus protection software on your own computer.
CIPA - The Greensburg-Decatur County Contractual Public Library complies with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) through the above policies and through adherence to the following:
All Library computers are filtered to protect against visual depictions of obscenity, child pornography, and materials harmful to / or inappropriate for minors. While the Greensburg-Decatur County Contractual Public Library attempts through filtering software to prevent access to inappropriate material, it is technically impossible to prevent access to all objectionable resources.
CIPA does not allow for the disabling of filtering software for minors under any circumstance.
Use of library computers will be monitored to the extent possible by library staff. However, it is the responsibility of parents and guardians to monitor and guide their children in the use of the Internet.
Minors shall not disclose personal identification information through the Internet of other forms of direct electronic communication including e-mail. Unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal identification information regarding minors is strictly prohibited.
All usage and safety policies apply to e-mail, the World Wide Web, and other forms of direct electronic communication.
